Wireless in CCTV

With the introduction to WIFI, Microwave and IP cameras to the video surveillance application the possibilities and capabilities to implement different solutions have tremendously increased. In this blog I will list several wireless scenarios and go into detail how to choose your equipment and how to install it.

First you would need to know the following:

1-Distance of wireless signal
2-LAN (line of sight) and if there any possible interference
3-Bandwidth needed
4-Weather conditions

In the First Scenario will start out with a simple wireless video surveillance application.

Consider the following Diagram:

The goal is to connect these two building with a wireless network to get video streaming from to the other.

First we will check band width: Building two will have a total of 4 cameras. Each security camera will use 1.5Mpb of the network if set in 30fps (frames per second) and a 740*480 resolution. The total amount of band width needed is 6Mpb.
Second we will check Distance and line of sight. Distance in this application is estimated to be 150ft and there is a direct Line of sight.

Choosing the equipment:

According to our findings above mid range wireless equipment can be used. Average cost of is around $750 per access point. Estimated project cost is around $1800.

We have selected the DLink DWL-7700ap for this demonstration.

We will need the following equipment.
1- 2 of the DWL-7700AP
2- Dlink Router
3- Dlink switched if you are connecting more then one device(optional)

Start first by disabling DHCP and setting all you configuration on static IP.

Log in to you DLink Router
IP address 192.168.0.1
Default username: admin
No password
Set all your cameras/ servers on default gateway address of 192.168.0.1
Set your wireless bridges on ip different IP address. By default they come as 192.168.0.50. You can keep on e at .50 and change the other to .51. Don’t forget to save an reboot.
Make sure that both bridges are set on transmitting on the same channel ID/frequency. By default the channel is set on 149. If you only have two AP you can keep it the same on both.

Test the wirless signal strength using the AP tool manager. You should have a %100 strength with such a short distance.

Ping you security cameras IP address to test connectivity.

You are all set. You just have configured your wireless video surveillance system and set up security cameras to work on wireless.

The power of Mega-pixel IP Cameras:

The highest resolution that you can get on Analog CCTV is D1 (740*480). This resolution was the maximum available prior to the introduction of Mega-Pixel cameras. These IP based cameras can reach a resolution of 2550*1900. With such a high resolution, Digital zoom becomes a useful tool. How useful, you ask? Aerecont Vision, a manufacturer of Mega pixel cameras stated that their 5mp cameras can read a license plate 120 feet away. These cameras can definitely become useful when dealing with applications that require a good quality zoom that is unmanned.
